Making Your Home Your Haven: Tips for Creating a Calming Space with Alyssa McMasters

Sep 12, 2024, 18:05 PM

Our homes are so much more than where we sleep and eat. They are filled with memories, tradition, togetherness and help us feel connected to ourselves. Alyssa McMasters, owner of Let Me Introduce Yourself and featured presenter at the 2024 Calgary Fall Home Show, knows the importance of creating spaces that support us and reflect the lives we want to live. “Our homes are a reflection of our inner selves. When our living spaces are organized, peaceful and aligned with our needs, they can significantly boost our confidence and mental clarity. A well-arranged environment reduces stress, creates a sense of control and allows us to focus on what truly matters.”

Ahead of this year’s show, we sat down with Alyssa to ask her advice on how to create calming, restorative and supportive living spaces that can take us from season to season.

Q: How can our homes and living spaces influence our confidence, mental clarity, and overall well-being?

A: When we feel good in our spaces, it naturally enhances our well-being and self-assurance. Remember, your home is a fluid space — one day it might be perfectly clean and the next, the kids may have turned it upside down. Embrace the flexibility of your space, just as you do in life. When you have the capacity, take the time to make your space truly yours again. And if you ever feel overwhelmed, consider bringing in some help, whether it's a house cleaner, a closet organizer or whatever support you need.

Q: As the colder weather approaches, what steps can someone take to confidently set up their home to be a supportive and nurturing environment for themselves and their family?

A: Preparing your home for colder weather is about creating warmth and comfort, both physically and emotionally. Confidence comes from knowing your home is ready to support your family through the season, so think about how each room can contribute to a sense of safety and comfort. Here are some ideas:

  • Create Inspirational Spaces: Designate areas in your home that inspire you. This could be a cozy reading nook, a vision board corner or a workspace that encourages productivity. Surround yourself with items that uplift and motivate you.

  • Set Up a Morning Routine Station: Create a space where you can start your day with intention. This might include a place for morning affirmations, meditation or journaling. Beginning the day with a positive routine sets a confident tone.

  • Set Up a Family Command Center: Use a central location for calendars, to-do lists and reminders. This helps keep everyone on track with school events, activities, and assignments.

  • Meal Planning and Prep: Plan and prep meals ahead of time, including lunches and snacks. Having a weekly meal plan can reduce stress and save time during busy school nights.

Q: What are your go-to products and design strategies for creating a home atmosphere that boosts relaxation and self-assurance?

I’m a big advocate for incorporating elements that resonate personally. When you create space in your home to showcase your achievements — whether it’s your university degree, souvenirs from your European adventure or the blanket your grandmother made  — you transform your home into a reflection of your relationships and accomplishments. These cherished items bring glimmers of joy into your day, sparking moments of excitement, success and nostalgia. Sure they might not fit perfectly into your design, but they make the space you!

Q: How do you personally prepare your home to help you confidently transition—both physically and mentally—into a new season?

A: Transitioning into a new season is a time for renewal and preparation. I begin by decluttering and doing a deep clean—it’s my way of hitting the reset button. Next, I switch out textiles like towels and bed linens to match the season, creating a fresh and inviting atmosphere. Although my husband jokes about our abundance of throw pillows, having a pillow for every season is non-negotiable for me—it’s a simple touch that brings seasonal joy. I also set up specific areas for seasonal activities, like a cozy reading nook for winter, and an extra indoor play area for my toddler which helps me embrace the season with confidence and clarity.

Q: What routines or activities do you recommend for maintaining a private sanctuary that reinforces inner confidence and calm?

A: Consistency is key. Daily routines like morning meditation, evening wind-down rituals, or even just taking a few minutes to tidy up can maintain the sanctuary vibe. It’s also important to personalize your space—whether that’s with photos, art, or items that inspire you. Surround yourself with things that uplift your spirit, and make time for activities that recharge you, like reading, journaling, or simply sitting quietly. These routines reinforce a sense of peace and confidence in your environment.
